Sep 22, 2021Tips

Few tips to fix your website issues.

You are not a web developer or website specialist, but you have a website running. Sometimes even the highest technologies have issues. When your website does have issues, you might not notice it and sometimes your website gets errors and isn’t displaying as it should. This article is to help you avoid all the problems that your website might have. All the fixes we will explain here are super easy to set up and will avoid you having an offline website. At Dotradio, we want to help our users to get the best out of their domain and website. We want you to have a working website without the need for you to hire an expensive developer to manage your website’s problems. Most of the following, you can do it on your own! So, if you want to learn small tricks to avoid website mistakes, read on!

The simple redirection can save you!

Yes, we did an entire blog post about it, but sometimes, set up some redirection for your domains and your website can avoid having a domain address lost on the web.

How to use redirection?

Let’s say that you have a main website such as: rockin247radio.com
and that you want to get another domain name to make sure nobody uses it.
So, you buy it and now you own (for instance): rockin247.radio.

In order to make sure the new domain does not land on a “error page”, you can enable a redirection so when people look for it (rockin247.radio), they are redirected to your main active domain rockin247radio.com.
If someone clicks on www.rockin247.radio, he will land on rockin247radio.com.

The redirection in place, your domain does not land on a not found error page!

You can do that one way or another, from a .radio domain to a .com domain or the opposite!

It does not matter, the important thing is that with some redirection(s) all your domain names land somewhere, which is good for your website because we can find you no matter how!

If you want to learn more about redirection, check out our blog article on this page.

Why is redirection so important

The security will help your website and your visitors!

Another quick thing that you should do to secure your website is to install/enable an SSL certificate.

Why do websites need an SSL certificate?

A website needs an SSL certificate to keep user data secure. The certificate proves the ownership of the website and prevents attackers from creating a fake version of the site and gain user trust.

We can distinguish three main types of benefits:

Encryption: SSL/TLS encryption is possible because of the public-private key pairing that SSL certificates facilitate. Clients (such as web browsers) get the public key necessary to open a TLS connection from a server’s SSL certificate.

Authentication: SSL certificates verify that a client is talking to the correct server that actually owns the domain. This helps prevent domain spoofing and other kinds of attacks.

HTTPS: Most crucially for businesses, an SSL certificate is necessary for an HTTPS web address. HTTPS is the secure form of HTTP, and HTTPS websites are websites that have their traffic encrypted by SSL/TLS.

In addition to securing user data in transit, HTTPS makes sites more trustworthy from a user’s perspective. Many users will not notice the difference between an http:// and an https:// web address, but most browsers have started tagging HTTP sites as “not secure” in more noticeable ways, attempting to provide incentive for switching to HTTPS and increasing security.

With better security, you have fewer chances of being hacked and so that your website is always reachable by your visitors.

On WordPress, you can get SSL plugins to get an auto generated certificate, you can also ask your hosting provider as a few companies give it for free.

The most secure certificates are not free and require checks from the provider to verify your identity and the fact that you really own the domain.

Get a website that is reliable

To avoid having a website that always breaks or is hard to keep online, you can use different solutions to have a reliable website.

There are a lot of solutions out there to build websites quickly and make sure everything works peacefully. The safer way is probably to use a CMS (Content Management System). It is a computer software used to manage the creation and modification of digital content, especially web sites.

A particularly good option is to build your website with the CMS  WordPress. Most of the hosting services offer to work with WordPress. It is the best and most used CMS on the web. It is also the one that Google likes the most, so it is a great option to have a good SEO.

Of course, you can use other CMS such as Joomla, Shopify, Squarespace or Wix. Every one of these CMS has its pros and cons. You can check on the web for details.

If you own an internet radio, you can check Radioking or Radio.co, which are easy solutions to set up online radios (radio /podcast streaming and web site).

The last option is to code your website yourself, but for that you need a web developer or know coding yourself. Some say that this is the most solid solution, but it is also the hardest to set up. In addition, if you choose that way, you should plan to regularly update not only the content but also the software used because things are continually changing in that field and otherwise you would face technical or security issues. With CMS, updates can be easily applied regularly to avoid these complications.

If you have no knowledge in coding and web development, we recommend you stick with CMS or solutions offered by your hosting provider.

Webiste with tools around it

The Dotradio option!

If you want the quickest way to be online, at DotRadio we offer a solution for you. When you register your domain name on register.radio, you have access to a profile page for free.

How does it work?

Basically, we have more than 100 themes for profile pages, you just have to choose one among them and enter a few pieces of information:
– Your name or your page name
– Add a profile picture
– Add a biography or some fun text
– Add optionally the links toward your social media, email, stream, live and shows if you have some.

This is it!

Then you connect the page to your domain name, and you have a working website. It is just a profile page, but it can avoid your domain name to be on “errors” or “empty”.

You can also use it while you are building a more exhaustive website.

Always renew your domain name on time

One of the basic things to do to avoid errors with your domain name and your website is to renew ON TIME your subscriptions for web site hosting and domain name registration.

When you receive the emails telling you that your domain and/or hosting plan are going to expire and you need to renew, then this is the best time to do it.

Just go to your account(s) and renew your domain name and hosting plans. Usually, companies warn you 30 days, sometimes 180 days before expiration. If you renew at that time, you can be sure that you will have no issue with your domain name or your website!

It is basic, but as a domain name provider, we have a lot of domain owners that do not renew on time, and a lot of them have website issues because of that.

Simple and easy: I receive the renewal email > I renew my subscription.

domain name renewal never forget!

Be wise when using your email address for subscription and important stuff

Another tip to avoid website issues is to not use your domain email address for important things.
Do not use your domain email address with your hosting provider, your domain name company, or any key areas.

Because when it comes to warnings, renewals, and all important things, if you did not renew your domain name on time, you will not be able to see these emails ever!

We recommend using a personal or professional email address to manage these things.

Use your domain name email address only for your customers, visitors, and everything that concerns your website and your visitors.

Check it NOW!

As we want you to have a working website and domain name. We recommend you check your website NOW!

To make sure that your domains are up and running. Open an incognito page or clear your cache before. Type your domain name in the search.

You will see if all is good or if you need to apply one of the advices above to fix it!

So, is your domain name working?

Redirect your dotradio website toward your social media

Conclusion

As domain name providers, we know what we are talking about, a lot of website owners forgot to renew their domain name, they do not think about redirection or these things we mentioned.

As a result, their website is offline or land on error pages and that is sad for them and their visitors.

We hope that these tips will help you see and understand why and how to make sure that your website and domain name are active and running normally.
